How Snapchat Stories Work
On Snapchat, stories are collections of snaps that stay visible for up to 24 hours. Once posted, they can be viewed by friends, custom lists, or the public depending on your privacy settings.
Stories do not delete automatically when you remove a snap unless you manually delete it.

How to Delete a Snapchat Story on Mobile
To delete a story snap:
Open Snapchat
Tap your profile icon
Tap your Story
Open the snap you want to remove
Tap the three dots
Select Delete Snap
The snap is removed instantly and cannot be recovered.
Deleting a Snap From a Public Story
If your snap is part of a public story:

Public story snaps are removed immediately and no longer visible to viewers.
